Frequently those afflicted with the disease of substance abuse also have diseases of the body, mind or emotions. For many, drugs and alcohol have become the solution, not the problem! That is, when one is in deep emotional stress, they may use whatever means to relieve the pain – even if illicit drugs are their “answer”. But obviously, this “solution” quickly becomes one of even greater pain and bondage, as addiction sets in.
Many who come to treatment find that they have been “self-medicating” for emotional or psychiatric issues that could be better addressed with other therapeutic or medical protocols. For this very reason, we at Mission Recovery Treatment Center perform several assessments of the client’s status when they enter our program. Our clinical team assess their physical, emotional and psychiatric condition and create specific plans for comprehensive treatment of the whole person while in our care.
Typically, those struggling with both chemical dependency and such emotional or psychological issues are dealing with, what is termed as a co-occurring, or dual-diagnosis disorder. These co-occurring disorders may include such conditions as:
Trauma and abuse survival
PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT AND INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY
Clients who have a history of psychiatric or emotional disorders or those who are currently taking psychotropic medication are referred to an approved psychiatrist. Our consulting psychiatrist can prescribe appropriate, non-addictive psychotropic medication. These medications can cause present disorders to subside, which can help a client successfully complete the treatment process. This medical support is intended, not to treat mental illness, but to stabilize it while in treatment.
After a patient is given an initial assessment, our psychiatrists may periodically review medications prescribed to the client to ensure that the medications are producing the desired results. Clients who are admitted to our Residential Inpatient treatment program or our Day treatment program can meet with one of our psychotherapists on a weekly basis. These therapy sessions can help clients feel more supported, validated, and ultimately adequately equipped to hold their addictions in indefinite remission. Our therapists can also help clients identify the emotional and behavioral issues that need to be dealt with prior to leaving our center.
